I will never forget the spirit Dwane Simmons had and the enthusiasm he brought to our team. I know his teachers and classmates won’t forget it either.
Dwane was tragically taken from us earlier this year, and the grief our team feels has been immeasurable. I know those feelings are shared by the University community, alumni and fans. As we move forward, we must never forget Dwane’s spirit and enthusiasm. We’ll try to represent it on the field every game.
After the tragedy, several alumni stepped forward with a wish to create an endowed scholarship in Dwane’s name. Their generosity has been overwhelming to Dwane’s family. I would be honored if you would add to his legacy with a gift to the Dwane Simmons Football Scholarship Fund. He was a fearless example of what an Ichabod should be, and his spirit can live on through future recipients of this scholarship.
Dwane battled back from two knee injuries – injuries that understandably cause many to give up the game. He used this spring to train for what would have been his senior year. He also worked hard in the classroom, completing nearly every upper level mass media class. Washburn will recognize his work with a posthumous bachelor of arts degree this December. This is a fitting tribute to Dwane and his family.
The scholarship will also serve as a tribute. You can either give online today or mail a gift to the Washburn University Foundation, 1729 SW MacVicar, Topeka, KS 66604 with a note indicating it is for the Dwane Simmons Scholarship Fund. Your gift will give others the chance to perform on the field and in the classroom with the same spirit and enthusiasm Dwane had.
Thank you,
Craig Schurig Head Coach, Washburn Football
